Nikki Haley garnered 62.9% of the votes, while Trump secured 33.2%, breaking his undefeated streak in the 2024 primaries. Although the District of Columbia is a heavily Democratic jurisdiction with only around 23,000 registered Republicans, Haley’s triumph has injected a glimmer of hope into her campaign.
Despite her struggles to gain traction against Trump’s formidable lead, Haley has vowed to persist in the race, at least until the pivotal Super Tuesday contests on March 5th. On this day, voters from 15 states and one U.S. territory will cast their ballots, with 874 Republican delegates at stake – the largest single-day haul of the primary season.

Nikki Haley’s Symbolic Victory and Donald Trump’s Dismissal
While Haley’s campaign celebrated her Washington D.C. win as a rejection of “Donald Trump and all his chaos,” the Trump campaign swiftly dismissed the victory, dubbing Haley the “Queen of the Swamp.”
In a statement, Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, declared, “While Nikki has been soundly rejected throughout the rest of America, she was just crowned Queen of the Swamp by the lobbyists and DC insiders that want to protect the failed status quo. The swamp has claimed their queen.”
Despite this setback, Trump remains the overwhelming frontrunner, having secured 247 delegates nationwide, compared to Haley’s 43. His dominance in the Republican primaries has been undeniable, with victories in every state contest leading up to Super Tuesday.

Nikki Haley’s Rallying Cry and Moderate Appeal
Nikki Haley, the former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, has positioned herself as a conservative alternative to Trump, appealing to moderate and independent-leaning voters. At a rally in Washington D.C. on Friday, she joked, “Who says there’s no Republicans in D.C., come on?” Haley emphasized the importance of personal connections, stating, “We’re trying to make sure that we touch every hand that we can and speak to every person.”
During the rally, Haley criticized Trump for increasing the federal deficit, prompting a supporter to shout, “He cannot win a general election. It’s madness.” Haley agreed, asserting her ability to prevent President Joe Biden from securing a second term, unlike Trump.
According to AP VoteCast data, Haley has indeed performed better among moderate voters, with 4 in 10 of her supporters in the South Carolina primary identifying as moderates, compared to just 15% for Trump.
